RTM Taps Calrec for Regional AoIP Rollout

From our Who’s Buying What page: Radio Televisyen Malaysia is rolling out an AES67 IP-based workflow to its regional radio stations across Malaysia. The move follows a successful initial trail of the technology at Perlis FM, the RTM regional network in the north of the country.

“IP infrastructure provides a range of benefits which were recognized by RTM: scalability and flexibility when it comes to further technology purchase installation. Each setup with RTM is, overall, very similar, meaning integration now and moving forwards is without any conversion technology or the need for additional interfaces,” stated David Chan, director of JAA Systems.

For the initial project, RTM turned to Calrec Audio and JAA, the console manufacturer’s regional partner, to build an AoIP system around six Calrec Type R fader panels. The system was installed in 2021 and ties together the station’s RCS Zetta automation system and a multiCAM Visual Radio system.

Since then, RTM has awarded contracts for twelve additional regional radio networks to Calrec and JAA Systems. After Perlis FM, AoIP systems were rolled out to Sabah FM and Labuan FM in November 2022 followed by Kedah FM, Multiari FM, Pahang FM, Terengganu FM, and most recently Negeri FM and Melaka FM. Work is ongoing at Keningau FM, Sandakan FM, and Tawau FM, and tender was recently won for the upgrade of Kelantan FM.

Once these projects are complete, about 60% of RTM’s regional stations will be using AoIP systems built around Calrec Type R fader panels. In total, 192 Type R panels and 104 Type R cores will used.

Although each project is scaled to the local needs, Chan stated that in most cases the main and backup on-air studios are fitted with a 16-fader panel and a main core. For smaller studios, such as ingest studios and edit suites, 12-fader panels were installed.
