UNESCO is paying tribute to radio on Wednesday Feb. 13 with the 8th edition of World Radio Day. Under the theme “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace,” this year’s celebration underscores the medium’s ability to encourage understanding and foster new perspectives.
For the 2019 edition, UNESCO is organizing an event, open to the public, at its headquarters in Paris. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Radio UNESCO will air on DAB+ and online from a temporary radio station set up by Broadcast Associes. Other stations broadcasting live from the UNESCO facilities include Monte Carlo Doualiya, Radio Campus, Radio France Internationale.
The organization is also holding 10 “Speed Workshops” for those interested in gaining hands-on experience in radio production. Workshop topics will cover: Writing for Radio: Tips and Tricks; Sound Recording; Sound Editing; Recording a Jingle; Podcasts and How to Make One; Hosting a Talkshow; Managing Sounds and Podcasts; Radio and the Internet; Promoting Radio on Social Media; and DAB+ for Freedom of Expression.
In the UN Secretary General António Guterres’ World Radio Day 2019 message he states: “Even in today’s world of digital communications, radio reaches more people than any other media platform. It conveys vital information and raises awareness on important issues…” The full message can be heard here.
