WJCU College Radio Brings In Record Donations Ahead of Hunger Fundraiser

"Blizzard Bash" provides meals to families in the Cleveland area

With the support of college radio station WJCU(FM) and John Carroll University students and staff, thousands of meals will soon be delivered to Cleveland families in need.

“Blizzard Bash” is an annual fundraising event that benefits The Hunger Network of Cleveland. With just a few short days until the event on Saturday, Feb. 8, fundraising efforts have already surpassed expectations, according to organizers.

“Thanks to the generosity of online donors and matching sponsors, this year’s event has raised enough in pre-funding to provide over 13,000 meals to Cleveland families,” wrote WJCU’s events director Zachary Sinutko in a press release. “This total breaks last year’s grand total and this year’s top goal before the doors even open this upcoming Saturday at 7 p.m.!”

Sinutko said the original goal for the event was to meet last year’s record of providing 12,000 meals, “but to hit that mark before the event has even started is a testament to the power of community, generosity and the dedication of local supporters.”

WJCU is no stranger to Radio World. Previously, the station was in the news for having set the Guinness World Record for longest consecutive radio interview. As of this year, the award-winning FM is now overseen by Dan Slentz, a longtime Radio World contributor.

With both studio and transmitter facilities located on the JCU campus, WJCU operates 24/7 with an effective radiated power of 2.5 kW at 88.7 MHz, heard across the greater Cleveland area. The student-run station used to broadcast from an old clock tower on campus.

This year’s event is co-sponsored by Crown Royal, Wooooo Energy and the Lakewood Truck Park. All have made matching pledges of more than $1,250. Every $25 donated to this year’s event will help provide approximately 75 meals to those in need. Donations can be made at any time here.
