GatesAir has named Tamjeed Ahmad as regional sales manager for the South Asia territory.
The transmitter manufacturer said Ahmad’s area will include India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
In a release, GatesAir noted Ahmad has 15 years of broadcast sales experience in South Asia, including roles at AJA Video Systems and Imagine Communications.
“While Tamjeed’s regional experience brings substantial strength to our growing APAC team, his passion for the broadcast industry is clear given his depth of knowledge on the technology side of the business,” said Jackie Yee, head of GatesAir’s Asia-Pacific sales, in the release.
Ahmad will report to Yee. GatesAir said he will work with its APAC partners, including Horizon Broadcast, to support future FM and TV projects.
The company said Ahmad’s hiring aligns with the Indian government’s recent announcement of the e-Auction of private FM channels. This initiative will bring up to 730 FM channels to more than 230 of the country’s uncovered cities. GatesAir suggested the new signals will require, at a minimum, new FM transmitters.
In the release, Ahmad said the company has a strong reputation in the region including its role in a previous FM licensing initiative in India 10 years ago.
The manufacturer also stated that it has participated in ATSC 3.0 trials in New Delhi, as the Indian government considers transitioning from the current DVB-T2 digital TV standard. It suggested a need for more of its Maxiva line of UHF TV transmitters there, should the standard be adopted.
