Rivian has made new entertainment options available to its EV car owners through a software update.
They include Google Cast and a native YouTube app. And SiriusXM is now available as an integrated feature.
“With the introduction of Google Cast and a native YouTube app, entertainment is always within reach when your vehicle is parked,” the carmaker states on its website.
“Rivian is the first automotive launch partner to offer Google Cast, along with the native YouTube on TV experience, which is the version of the app that’s optimized for large-screen devices, like TVs and streamers. The addition of both services ensures you have the newest streaming options that are easy to use and built for enjoying your favorite media.”
The company said Google Cast brings approximately 3,000 apps to the vehicle, accessible when it is parked. “Simply cast from your phone to watch your favorite streaming app subscriptions, flip through a Google Photos slideshow of holidays and trips past, or play a crackling fireplace from YouTube while you break out the snacks.”
Rivian customers are getting a temporary preview of those two features that can be streamed through is Connect+ service.
Meanwhile SiriusXM is available through a subscription; a free trial subscription is available to all Rivian customers now.
(Further demonstrating what carmakers can do these days with software updates, the company also added a “festive surprise” for drivers: a center display that transforms into a winter scene when the car is parked. “You also have the option to replace the normal lock sound and light effect with a holiday version: a holiday jingle lock sound and festive light animation.” It’s described near the bottom of the software announcement.)
