Musician and entrepreneur will.i.am has launched a media platform that nods to the power of radio but is AI-driven and accessed via a smartphone app.

The platform is called RAiDiO.FYI.

FYI is the name of a technology company founded by will.i.am that puts AI to work for creative professionals. RAiDiO.FYI is described as an “AI-infused interactive, conversational media platform that transforms radio as we know it into a new dimension.”

Noting that Aug. 20 is celebrated in the U.S. as National Radio Day, the press release states: “Having built his music career with global music super group Black Eyed Peas, will.i.am is endeared to radio, and understands first-hand how integral it is in breaking and making the world’s most beloved music acts. Because audiences now have multiple pathways to get their music, news and information via radio, streaming services and podcasts, the introduction of RAiDiO.FYI is the right time to harness AI and allow listeners to customize content to their liking and discover new music on their own terms.”

RAiDiO.FYI is accessed through the FYI.AI app for iPhone and Android smartphones and is free to use.

The company says the platform combines radio with AI into a “unique experience akin to the shift from using a traditional telephone vs smart phone.” The announcement emphasizes interactivity. It says listeners “can chat with their radio stations, and ask about the music or stories behind the songs, delving further into the news, sports, culture and fashion trends. Listeners instantly become active participants, choosing topics, asking questions and talking with AI personas. Via trusted stations as a source and inspiration, audiences can explore passions and interests on a much deeper level.”

The listener can choose from a variety of AI personas “including unique voices that reflect culture, from the streets of South Los Angeles to the underground clubs of East London, and beyond.” A listener can interrupt an AI persona, using conversational language to ask for more information about the content, and receive information and news. Personalization of the content is location-based, and the listener can customize their own stations by curating certain news and topics.

FYI said it also partners with content creators “to curate and publish stations with the latest and freshest news from culture, sports, tech, politics and more.”

The company posted a brief demo video, watch it below.
