“Radio Bridges” Contest Connects Global Stations for Climate Action

World Radio Day 2025 theme focuses on radio’s role in addressing the climate crisis

The theme for World Radio Day this year is “Radio and Climate Change.” The Permanent Conference of Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators (COPEAM), one of the event’s partners, has organized an international contest to support collaboration between radio stations in different countries on the subject of climate.

The contest, launched earlier in January, is called “Radio Bridges – Joint Actions for the Climate.” The goal, according to the group, is to develop “local and global solutions to this planetary emergency” while highlighting innovation and communication among different cultures.

The three categories being judged are listener voices, shared content and guests and representation of women and vulnerable people. A promotional video COPEAM put together highlights why interested broadcasters should consider participating.

Anyone affiliated with a radio station globally, whether public or commercial, is eligible to participate, provided they can supply evidence of an exchange between two radio stations from different countries, conducted in 2024 or earlier. This includes a relevant audio file of the exchange. All of the details are available at COPEAM’s Call for Participation page.

The submission deadline is Jan. 31. COPEAM said winners will receive global visibility on United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization platforms and partner channels, as well as “international networking opportunities.”

Radio Bridges is supported by UNESCO, the organizer of World Radio Day, which is held annually on Feb. 13. Winners of the contest will be announced on that day. The event also offers opportunities for collaboration with radio stations globally, including royalty-free audio and visual clips regarding climate change, for registered stations.

World Radio Day was proclaimed in 2011 by the member states of UNESCO and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.
