Letter: Let’s Keep Our Reporting Neutral, Please

A reader wants to keep political bias out of journalism

Radio World welcomes letters to the editor on this or any story. Email radioworld@futurenet.com.

Hey Elle. First, thank you for the work you do! Up to this point, I haven’t felt the need to write your publication to express concerns about content. But the [SmartBrief newsletter] email published today (10-23), and the article “LeGeyt: Trump Threats Against Networks Undermine ‘Basic Press Freedom’” caused me concern.

When we’re this close to a presidential election, 12 days, I believe it’s best to avoid any article/link expressing negative or positive issues with a candidate for president. And I would make that statement regardless of whatever their political affiliation is.

I’ve been a journalist for more than 40 years. Over the past 10 years, I’ve become increasingly ashamed of many of my colleagues who call themselves journalists. They’ve become mouthpieces for special interest groups, including political parties.

Hopefully, we can one day return to the core of what journalism is: To report the facts, to express both sides of a story without bias and to keep the quantity of stories in any debate as equal as possible. Not implying that you haven’t … just a general comment on our industry!

I appreciate your attention.

— Jeff Dantre, Atlanta, Ga.
