Audio engineers of all stripes met this week, Oct. 2-5, in San Francisco for the 125th Audio Engineering Society convention.
More than 400 exhibitors had their wares and services on display. Dozens of sessions occupied attendees. Sessions of interest to broadcasters were held examining digital radio, broadcasting for mobile and handheld devices, Internet streaming along with perennials such as the latest in audio processing, loudness questions, studio design considerations and recent studies in psychoacoustics.
Of particular note was a session devoted to broadcast audio. It was to be moderated by Dave Bialik, however he needed to cancel because he is recovering from surgery. Other members of the convention organizing committee are filling in for him; and panel participants, including Radio World columnist Skip Pizzi are helping out with Bialik's moderator duties.
There were also technical tours of Dolby Labs. Keynote speaker was Chris Stone, cofounder of the Record Plant studio. Stone addressed changes in technology and the recording industry business model.
