Mike Law of U.K.’s BCD Audio has brought to our attention some groundwork being laid for an enhancement of the AES3 digital audio standard; one that might be beneficial for broadcasters.

Originally a stereo 48 kHz medium, AES3 wasn’t designed to handle multichannel/surround sound duties. Mike and others are working on what they call AES-X196, a more contemporary multichannel (four or eight channels of 48 kHz or four of 96 kHz) transport medium that they feel won’t render obsolete significant numbers of facilities or hardware.

They are eager for input and feedback, ranging from limitations of digital signal conversion to legacy hardware concerns and anything in between or not considered.
