Merlin Media’s experiment in doing “news” a different way has been abandoned and now some of the fallout is hitting. The company is offloading WRXP(FM), which was WEMP under the news format, to CBS Radio.
CBS Radio plans to turn the station into an FM simulcast for its flagship WFAN(AM) sports talk station. Besides sports talk shows, WFAN carries New York Giants, Mets, Brooklyn Nets and New Jersey Devils games. The station will change, for the third time this year, its call letters — becoming WFAN(FM).
CBS Radio President and CEO Dan Mason wasted no time in promoting the station and at the same time his nascent sports radio network, saying, “This is an extremely exciting opportunity to expand our radio presence in the nation’s largest market … Sports is a very popular format and a huge growth category for our business.” This story has been amended from an earlier version. The station WRXP(FM) was originally noted as WRPX(FM). We regret the error.
